On the Cantorial Feature, two very nice selections by one of the finest Cantors of the preceding generation, Cantor Samuel Taube. Born in Poland in 1912, he was serving as a chazzan in Paris when the Germans invaded France. He was deported to Auschwitz and survived by singing for his German captors. This saved his life until he was liberated by the Russian Army in 1945. After serving in London for several years he came to America in 1958 and became Cantor of the Beth Sholom Congregation in Washington. In 1963, he accepted a position in Montreal and remained there until the mid-1980’s when he made aliyah and settled in Rehovot, where he opened a school to train cantors. He passed away in 2008 at the age of 96. We hear two selections from a 1958 album which he recorded for the Famous company, shortly after his arrival in Washington. He is accompanied by the legendary choir director Oscar Julius, at the organ.
