Larry’s blog and program playlists for January 1, 8, 15 and 22, 2012
on January 24th, 2012 at 1:04 amHi everybody! Sorry I haven’t updated in a while but we (or I guess I should say Ben) has been updating the website to make it even better so I have been staying out of his way! In any event I wanted to post some updates for the January programs so you will know what is on them. But first a little news in the world of Jewish music…
YAFFA YARKONI, ONE OF ISRAEL’S FIRST STARS DIES AT 86
On January 1, Yaffa Yarkoni, one of Israel’s first and brightest singing stars died at the age of 86. She had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease for a number of years. Born in what was then Palestine in 1925, she began her studies as a dancer and then branched out into singing. During the War of Independence in 1948 she was serving as a radioman and was asked to sing for the troops. This began a decades long career as a singer. Known as “Sabra” she recorded albums in Israel and for Columbia Records in the US. She was very popular for many years and had her own unique style whether singing in Hebrew, Yiddish or other languages. She continued to perform until falling ill some years ago. She will always be remembered for her role in popularizing Israeli, then a new genre, with audiences around the world. May her memory be for a blessing.
