On the Cantorial feature, the only two known Cantorial recordings of the legendary opera star, cantor and singer, the great Joseph Schmidt (1904-1942). Born in Rumania, by the late 1920’s he had established himself as one Germany’s most popular singing stars. He was even known as “The German Caruso”. With the rise of Hitler, he left Germany and was trying to get to the United States and was interned in a Swiss labor camp where he was forced to perform back breaking labor. He suffered a heart attack and died in the camp in 1942. One of the great voices of all time, stilled in the darkness of the Holocaust. On the Cantorial feature, the only two known Cantorial recordings, made in Germany about 1934.
