On the Cantorial Feature, two very nice selections by one of the great voices of the Golden Age, Cantor Joseph Shlisky (1894-1955). His life story could be made into a movie!! Born in Ostrowice, Poland in 1894, he was literally kidnapped at the age of 10 by an unscrupulous choir director, who instead of taking the choir to Warsaw, transported them to Toronto, Canada!! He was taken in by an old rag dealer who gave him a job and a place to sleep. A few years later, he was heard singing by Lady Eaton, a prestigious personality, who arranged for him to attend the Royal Conservatory. At the same time he began to officiate as a Cantor and with the money he made, brought his whole family over from Europe!! By the 1920’s he had become one of the world’s most famous Cantors! At the height of his career in 1934 he suffered a massive, paralytic stroke. He never sang again and lived out the remainder of his life as an invalid and passed away in New York in 1955.
1. Ono B’Koach-recorded for Vocalion in 1923.
2. Tikanto Shabbos and Uv’Yom Hashabbos-recorded for Victor in 1927, and accompanied during the Uv’Yom Hashabbos by a choir conducted by Posner. Orchestra conducted by Leroy Shield, one of Victor’s foremost conductors.
