On this week’s program, two selections in honor of my son Matthew, who celebrates his 21st birthday today!! Although he has inherited his mother’s mike fright, he is an invaluable aid in the preparation of the program. He is a tremendous musicologist and has a unique knowledge of all types of music.  The selections are:

1. Meyerkeh, Mein Zun-Jan Peerce-1961. Matt’s Hebrew name is Meir, so a song to little Meir, to Meirkeh, as it is known in Yiddish.

2. Uv’Yom Hashabbos-The Samuel Sterner Choir-1945. Matt loves a good choir, so here is one of the most famous of the preceding generation, recorded live off the air in the New York area.

Hansel and Gensel-Mickey Katz-1959

Rabbi Akiva (spoof of the Beatles hit “Lady Madonna”)-Shlock Rock-1997

Lech Lecha-Safam-1978

Yibuneh Hamikdosh-Belz Chassidic Choir-1984

Petrograd-Aaron Lebedeff-1927

Or Chadash-Lev V’Nefesh-1998

On the Cantorial Feature, two very nice selections by a Cantor who began his career in pre-Holocaust Russia and ended up in Israel many years later. Cantor Misha Alexandrovitch (1914-2002). Born in Russia, he obtained his first Cantorial position in 1937 in Kovno, Lithuania. With the German invasion in 1941, he escaped into Russia and served in the Soviet military during the war. After the war ended, he was unable to continue as a chazzan due to the repressive Soviet government. From 1946 to 1969, he was one of the leading singers of all types of music in the Soviet Union. Longing for freedom, he applied for a emigration visa to Israel. He was stripped of everything and became what was known in those days as a “refusenik”. With the intervention of the United Nations he was able to go to Israel in 1971. He lived there until 1975, when he moved to the United States where he lived until 1990, when he moved to Germany where he lived until his passing in 2002. On today’s Cantorial Feature, two very nice selections from the series he recorded for RCA Victor in the mid-1970’s after his arrival in Israel. Two famous Cantorial and Choral selections. Cantor Alexandrovitch is accompanied by the male chorus of the Zionist Organization Of America:

1. Retzai Vimnuchosaynu-composed by Cantor Israel Alter.

2. Ki Lekach Tov-composed by Cantor David Roitman and legendary composer and conductor Joseph Rumshinsky.
