On the Cantorial Feature this week, two very nice selections by one of the finest chazzonim of the preceding generation, Cantor Samuel Taube. Born in Poland in 1912, he moved to Vienna with his family while a child. By the 1930’s he was serving in Vienna as a chazzan. With the German invasion in 1938 he went to Paris where he was Cantor of the shul of the Rue De La Montevideo until 1943, when he was deported to Auschwitz. His voice kept him alive as was commanded to sing for his German captors every day until he was liberated by the Russian Army in January of 1945. Emigrating to England after the war, he was Cantor of the famous Hendon Synagogue of London until 1958, when he succeeded Cantor Sholom Katz at the Beth Sholom Congregation of Washington, DC. In 1963 he left Washington and moved to Montreal where he served with great distinction until he moved to Israel and opened a school to train young Cantors. Among his pupils was the famous Cantor Ben-Zion Miller. Cantor Taube passed away in 2008 at the age of 96. During his tenure in Washington he recorded an album for the Famous Recording Company. On today’s Cantorial Feature, we hear two selections from that album:
1. Retzeh Vimnuchosaynu
2. Kiddush For Shabbos
