On the Cantorial Feature, three selections by a fine Cantor of the preceding generation, Cantor Uri Frenkel. Born in Munkatch in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1915. At the age of nine he emigrated with his family to England. He held positions in England and came to the United States in 1948, after having lost many family members in the Holocaust. After stops in New York and Pittsburgh he came to Los Angeles in 1955 and officiated there until his death in 1995. He appeared in the Neil Diamond remake of “The Jazz Singer” in 1980. On today’s Cantorial feature we hear three selections from a 1951 series he recorded for the Disc company in New York. Because they were recorded on 10″ 78-rpm records they are short in duration, only about two and a half minutes each. Because of that I present an extra selection. I hope you enjoy these fine recordings. He is accompanied by the famous Jewish organist, Nicholas Saslavsky (1885-1965).
