On the Cantorial Feature, two very nice selections by one of the great Cantors of the Golden Age, Cantor Joseph Shlisky. His biography would make a great adventure movie! Born in Ostrowice, Poland in 1894, he was a child singer in a choir and the choir master kidnapped the boys and took them to Toronto, Canada. Escaping from this unscrupulous choir master, he lived with an uncle and was discovered singing in a factory where he worked by Lady Eaton who arranged for his education at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. He became a Cantor as a teen ager and with the money he earned, brought his whole family to Canada. Arriving in New York in 1920, he was engaged by a number of leading congregations in New York. He also began recording as well. His was a voice of lovely high tenor, with great coloratura and as it was described, “Of limpid purity”. He was one of the most popular Cantors in the 1920’s. At the height of his career, after Passover in 1934, he was stricken with a massive paralytic stroke which disabled him and sadly, brought an end to his career. He lived the remainder of his life as a recluse and died in New York in 1955. On the Cantorial feature two beautiful selections:

1. Ono B’Koach-Recorded for Vocalion in 1923

2. Tikanto Shabbos-Recorded for Victor in 1927, with choir and orchestra conducted by Leroy Shield.
