On the Cantorial Feature this week, two very nice selections by an outstanding Cantor of the preceding generation who davvened for a while in Washington, Cantor Samuel Taube. Born in Lodz, Poland in 1912 he was the son of a well known chazzan.  By the time of the Holocaust he was davvening at a prestigious shul in Paris. Deported to Auschwitz, he survived by singing for his German captors. After the war he went to London where he officiated at several important shuls. In 1958 he came to America and became Cantor of the Beth Sholom congregation in Washington, DC. He stayed there until 1963 when he went to Montreal. He was one of that city’s foremost chazzanim until making Aliyah in the 1980’s. Once in Israel, he opened a school for chazzanim and he passed away at the age of 96 in 2008. The two selections come from an album which he recorded while in Washington in 1958.
