On today’s Cantorial Feature, two outstanding selections by a great Chazzan of the preceding generation, Cantor David Kusevitzky. The youngest of the four Kusevitzky brothers, he was born in Poland in 1911. After achieving success in pre-war Poland as a choir singer and conductor and then as a Cantor himself, he left Poland in 1936 to become Cantor of the Hendon Synagogue in London.  He remained there until 1948 when he came to the United States to become Cantor of Temple Emanu-El in Brooklyn, where he officiated until his passing in 1985. He was also a prolific composer, especially together with his long time choir conductor, Herman Zalis (1885-1969). On today’s Cantorial Feature two great compositions by this great duo. They were recorded for Columbia Records in 1948, shortly after Cantor Kusevitzky’s arrival in the United States. He is accompanied by the choir of Temple Emanu El conducted by Herman Zalis.
