On the Cantorial Feature, two very fine selections by a great Chazzan of the preceding generation who davvened for a time here in Washington, Samuel Taube. Born in Poland in 1912, he held positions in various European capitals including Vienna and Paris. While serving in Paris in 1943 he was arrested and deported to Auschwitz. There, his voice saved him as he sang for his captors until he was liberated by the Russian Army in January, 1945. Leaving Poland, he went to London and served major congregations there, especially the Hendon and Dalston synagogues. In 1958, he came to the United States and became Cantor of the Beth Sholom Congregation here in Washington DC. He remained here until 1963, when he moved to Montreal and served many synagogues until making Aliyah in 1996 and when he lived in Israel, he opened a school for training young Cantors. He died at the age of 96 in 2008! On today’s Cantorial feature we hear two selections from an album he recorded while serving in Washington for Famous Records in 1958.
