On the Cantorial Feature, three very fine selections by Bas Sheva. Bas Sheva was the stage name of Bernice Kanefsky. Born in Philadelphia in 1926, she was recognized for her fine voice, and her ability to sing Cantorial music, although at that time women were precluded from serving as cantors in all denominations. She was very popular in concert and appeared in several Yiddish films in the late 1940’s. In 1953, she signed with Capitol Records and released an album of Cantorials in 1953. She died suddenly in 1960 at the age of only 34, from a allergic reaction to medication. On today’s program we hear three selections from the Capitol album:
