On the Cantorial Feature, two very nice selections by Cantor Sidney Shicoff. Born in 1920 in New York, he became a well-known Chazzan after service in the military in World War II, and by the 1950’s was one of New York’s foremost Cantors. His promising career was cut short when he passed away of a massive heart attack in 1965 at the age of only 45 years old. His son Neil, later became a singer in the Metropolitan Opera. On today’s program we hear two very fine selections from a 1956 album which he recorded for the Metro Music Company in New York. He is accompanied on the recording by the legendary accompanist and conductor Abe Ellstein (1907-1963).
