Hi Everybody!! Another new edition of the program is up on the website for your enjoyment!! The Three Weeks continue and our program reflects this somber and introspective time of the year. Ben and I feature music which is most appropriate for this time of year, culled from our family archive of 110 years of great recordings!! On the Cantorial Feature, two very nice selections by a very well-known Chazzan in the New York area, whose career was cut short when he passed away at an early age, Cantor Sidney Shicoff. Born in New York in 1920, he accompanied his father, a noted Cantor, as a child soloist. As an adult, blessed with a rich, powerful tenor voice, he davvened in all the major New York shuls, and in the Catskill resort hotels as well. His career was cut short when he passed away of a heart attack in 1965, when he was only 45 years old. His son, Neil, was a soloist for many years in the Metropolitan Opera. We hear two selections from a 1956 album which he made for the Metro Music Company in New York.

Hi Everybody!! Another great edition of the program is up on the website for your enjoyment!! A great regular edition of the program filled with the finest in vintage and modern Jewish music, culled from our family archive of over 110 years of great recordings!! Now that we are in the Three Weeks we make some changes to the program. There will be no Comedy Corner and more music of introspection and reflection, as is fitting in these somber days. On this week’s Cantorial Feature, two very nice selections by Cantor Chaskeleh Ritter. Born in New York in 1916, he was a leading Chazzan in the New York area by the 1940’s. After military service in World War II as a Chaplain, he served several congregations in the New York area for many decades. He passed away in 2002. We hear two selections from a 1954 album made for the ABC company. He is accompanied by the choir of Abraham Nadel (1926-1985), a major choir director in the New York area.

On the Cantorial Feature, two very nice selections by one of the finest Cantors of the preceding generation, Cantor Samuel Taube. Born in Poland in 1912, he was serving as a chazzan in Paris when the Germans invaded France. He was deported to Auschwitz and survived by singing for his German captors. This saved his life until he was liberated by the Russian Army in 1945. After serving in London for several years he came to America in 1958 and became Cantor of the Beth Sholom Congregation in Washington. In 1963, he accepted a position in Montreal and remained there until the mid-1980’s when he made aliyah and settled in Rehovot, where he opened a school to train cantors. He passed away in 2008 at the age of 96. We hear two selections from a 1958 album which he recorded for the Famous company, shortly after his arrival in Washington. He is accompanied by the legendary choir director Oscar Julius, at the organ.

On the Cantorial Feature, two very nice selections by probably the most famous Cantor of all time, Yossele Rosenblatt. His yartzeit was observed last week. Born in the Ukraine in 1882, he came to America in 1912, after serving congregations in Munkatch and Hamburg. He was a prolific composer and recording artist, leaving many recordings and by the early 1920’s he was one of the most popular singers in America. He was appearing in a series of travelogues for Fox in Palestine, where he passed away of a heart attack at the age of only 51 in June, 1933. Here are two of his most famous compositions:

1. Halleluyah (Psalm 113)-Recorded for Victor in 1921.

2. Yishtabach-Recorded for Victor in 1919.
