On today’s Cantorial Feature, two very nice selections by the renowned Cantor, Paul Kowarsky. Born in South Africa in 1951, he studied music under several famous Chazzanim. In 1976, he accepted a very fine position with a shul in Cincinnati. In 1982, he moved to Toronto and was very well known there. He also served as a judge for many years. The two selections are from a fine 1978 album he recorded during his tenure in Cincinnati.

On the Cantorial Feature, two very nice selections by a fine Chazzan of the preceding generation, Cantor Abraham Wolkin. Born in New York in 1918, he studied music and became a Cantor while still in his teens. In 1939, he joined the Metropolitan Opera Chorus. From 1952 until 1988, he was the Cantor of the famous Brown’s hotel in the Catskills. He was also the Cantor of the Chateau D’Or Catering Hall in Brooklyn. He passed away in 2015, at the age of 96. The two selections are from a 1957 Tikva album.

On this week’s Cantorial feature, I gratefully acknowledge my good friend and colleague, Charlie Bernhaut, host of “Two Hours Of Jewish Soul” which can be heard at charliebernhaut.com. It’s a great show and I recommend it highly!! In 1981, Cantor Paul Zim released a cassette called “A Tribute To My Father”. It has never been re-issued. My copy of it is “lost” somewhere in the archive and I can’t find it. Charlie was kind enough to make me a copy of his on a CD and sent to me. So on the Cantorial Feature, here are two selections from the album. You will enjoy them very much!!

On this week’s Cantorial Feature, two very nice selections presented in honor of the 16th yartzeit of my late mother, Roslyn Shor, z”l. A great lover of Cantorial music, we have in her memory two selections by her favorite Chazzan, Sholom Katz. Born in Romania in 1914, he survived the Holocaust by his voice when a German officer heard him sing and spared him. Arriving in Washington in 1947, he became Cantor of the Beth Sholom congregation, and my Mom had the opportunity to hear him davven many times. Leaving the shul in 1957 to pursue full time concert and recording work, he continued to live in Washington until he passed away in 1982. Our families continue our friendship to this day.
