On the Cantorial Feature, two very nice selections by Cantor Moshe Teleshevsky. Born in Russia in 1927, he came to America as a young man and in the 1950’s held his first Cantorial positions in the New York area. He was very closely associated with the Lubavitcher Rebbe and was known as “The Rebbe’s Chazzan” and sang at many Chabad gatherings over the years. He passed away in 2012. These two selections are taken from his first recording, a 1972 album in which he accompanied by the Abraham Nadel Choir.

On the Cantorial Feature, two very nice selections by Cantor Sidney Shicoff. Born in 1920 in New York, he became a well-known Chazzan after service in the military in World War II, and by the 1950’s was one of New York’s foremost Cantors. His promising career was cut short when he passed away of a massive heart attack in 1965 at the age of only 45 years old. His son Neil, later became a singer in the Metropolitan Opera. On today’s program we hear two very fine selections from a 1956 album which he recorded for the Metro Music Company in New York. He is accompanied on the recording by the legendary accompanist and conductor Abe Ellstein (1907-1963).

On this week’s Cantorial Feature, two selections by Cantor Jacob Koussevitzky. One of the four Koussevitzky brothers, all world famous cantors, he was born in Smorgon, in the Russian Empire, in 1903. He davvened in several places in the 1920’s and 1930’s in Russia and Poland. In 1936, he left Poland and became cantor of the Dalston Synagogue in London, where he stayed until 1951 when he went to Winnepeg, Canada for a couple of years and then from 1953 until his untimely passing in 1959, he davvened in New York. Cantor Koussevitzky was an outstanding interpreter of the prayers and his style ranked him as one of the great “Zoger” chazzanim. On today’s Cantorial Feature, we hear two very nice selections from a 1956 album, recorded in New York.

On the Cantorial Feature, three very fine selections by Bas Sheva. Bas Sheva was the stage name of Bernice Kanefsky. Born in Philadelphia in 1926, she was recognized for her fine voice, and her ability to sing Cantorial music, although at that time women were precluded from serving as cantors in all denominations. She was very popular in concert and appeared in several Yiddish films in the late 1940’s. In 1953, she signed with Capitol Records and released an album of Cantorials in 1953. She died suddenly in 1960 at the age of only 34, from a allergic reaction to medication. On today’s program we hear three selections from the Capitol album:

On this week’s Cantorial Feature, two very nice selections by Cantor Benjamin Siegel (1919-2004). Born in Poland he came to the United States as a child and was raised in New York. He obtained his first Cantorial position in Spring Valley, New York in 1940. He served in the US Navy during World War II and conducted many services.  In 1950, he became Cantor of the prestigious Temple Israel of Great Neck, New York, a post he held until his retirement in 1985. He continued to officiate on the High Holidays until 1991. He passed away in 2004. On today’s Cantorial Feature, two selections from a 1965 album released by the shul.
