Program of September 18, 2016-Special tribute to Cantor Moshe Koussevitzky on his 50th yartzeit

Hi Everybody!! Another great program is up on the website for you to enjoy!! On this morning’s program, from my side of the table, will feature recordings by the great Cantor Moshe Koussevitzky (1899-1966) whose 50th yartzeit was observed this past week. Known as the “Chazzan Ha Dor”, the Cantor of his generation, and considered by many to be the greatest Cantor of all time, his was a magical and majestic voice that graced the umid and the concert stage for over 40 years with a voice of unsurpassed power and beauty. Program of September 11, 2016-With special material for the 15th anniversary of Sept. 11th

On this week’s Cantorial Feature, two very nice selections by Cantor Uri Frenkel. Born in Munkatch in 1915, his family moved to England while he was still a child. Establishing himself on the British Cantorial scene in the 1940’s he held several positions in London before coming to the United States in 1949. He held positions in New York, Pittsburgh and in 1957 he became Cantor of the Sinai Temple in Los Angeles where he remained until his passing in 1995. He appeared in the film “The Jazz Singer” starring Neil Diamond in 1980.  The two selections we hear on the Cantorial Feature are from a 1951 series recorded for Disc Records in New York. Cantor Frenkel is accompanied by Nicholas L.  Saslavsky, well known cantorial accompianist.

On the Cantorial Feature, two very nice selections by one of the foremost Cantors of the preceding generation, Cantor Louis Danto. Born in Suwalki, Poland in 1929, he was the only one of his family to survive the Holocaust. After years of studying music in Europe he came first to America in the 1950’s and for many years was a leading Cantor in Toronto, Canada until his retirement in 1998. He passed away in 2010. He was one of the finest bel canto tenors in any genre. These two selections are from a 1976 album:

Hi Everybody!! Another new program is up on the website for your enjoyment!! It is our special program for the Shabbos Nachamu weekend!! With the somber days of the Three Weeks and Tisha B’Av behind us now, we present a very upbeat, inspiring and happy program for your enjoyment!! Ben and I hope that you enjoy it!! We also pay tribute to the late Fyvush Finkel, who passed away earlier in the week. A great star of the Yiddish stage who crossed over into the American mainstream in the 1990’s with his starring roles on “Picket Fences” and “Boston Public”. On the Cantorial Feature this week two very nice selections recorded by Cantor Henoch Borenstein. One of the six Borenstein brothers, all well known chazzanim, he was born in Poland in 1902. After singing in well known choirs in Poland, he came to America in 1921. After serving in New York for a number of years, he went to Philadelphia where he served and remained until his passing in 1996. On the Cantorial feature two recordings from different stages of his career:
